Workshop Description:
Participants will analyze the relationship between classroom learning environment and equity, define the levels of student engagement using a research-based framework, and examine learning methods that promote authentic student engagement. Research indicates that teachers are the single most important lever in school to impact both student learning and experiences in the classroom (Rand, 2012). In this session, participants will analyze the relationship between classroom learning environment and equity, examine learning methods that promote student-driven learning, and determine how these strategies can be customized for the needs of their students. Participants will leave the session with the knowledge and skill set to apply learning methods to their context.

Holistic Equitable Educational Strategies to Engage African American Males in the Classroom and Community.
Workshop Presenters
Dr. Anthony Irvin, Father Stephen Thorne, and Dr. Ronald W. Whitaker, II
This workshop prepares teachers and educational leaders to learn holistic strategies to engage African American males in the school and school community. The aforementioned is critically important, given the national data that outlines academic and employment gaps for African American Students (Schott Report, 2015 & Pew research, 2013). Specifically, despite the focus of education reform initiatives for several decades, disparities in access, opportunity, and achievement persist for African American male students. Therefore, this workshop gives participants exemplar practices to engage this population. Further, this workshop also includes an interactive panel discussion.
